Meet The Maker – Chasin’ Unicorns by Melissa Gandarinho

When Melissa Gandarinho, from www.mgandarinho.com, an amazing cruelty free, health, wellness and beauty blogger who spends her time helping and educating readers and viewers, on becoming and switching to being cruelty free –  asked to interview us for a Meet the Makers feature, we were more than stoked and honored!  With a passion for writing, educating, and photography, her website has become a source for many.

We were so touched  by her kind words and we had so much fun these questions. Here is a fun re-post of her post, be sure to give her a follow to stay up to date on some pretty awesome blog post! Thank you again Melissa!

“Thus, here we are. With a purchase in for bath bombs and crystals, I can now say I’m on the Chasin’ Unicorns bandwagon and I’m so excited. You can tell these ladies really believe in what they create and what they sell. Crystals are really therapeutic and truly help those in need of it, and having these ladies create products that achieve that, is an amazing thing.

Both ladies took time to answer the questions, so grab a drink and let’s get to know Jo and Sam:”

As a company that focuses on being cruelty free and vegan, how hard is it to make sure all your ingredients stay true to the brand?

Our main mission was to create products that were all natural and free of dyes, chemical fragrances, toxins and harsh ingredients.  With that usually (hopefully) comes cruelty-free and vegan.  To some extent they have become buzz words, even the big names (ahem Lush) use them.  But all-natural is really what you want to look for in bath & body products.  All of those pretty bright colors that are cruelty-free and vegan, are still not healthy for humans.  – Jo

After we figured out what we wanted to work with, it wasn’t that hard to stay true to the brand. Especially when you know exactly what you want to put out there. So many brands these days on the shelves, I’m just like why? Why do you even have to add those ingredients?? Makes no sense to me. Well besides for saving money & shelf life purposes. But as the world wakes up, companies and products must wake up too. – Sam

The name Chasin’ Unicorns, how did it come about, and like every other unicorn fan, why unicorns?

Chasin’ Unicorns is something that I actually came up with a year before meeting Sam.  It has a double (if not more) meaning.  In marketing/business, a ‘unicorn’ is a product or service that takes off literally overnight and just goes crazy. When we were looking for an identity for ourselves, we still didn’t know what products we would end up creating since we began simply as a lifestyle blog.  Since I already had Chasin’ Unicorns, we quickly learned that the definition of a unicorn is ‘mystical, beautiful, and hard to tame.’  We couldn’t believe how well it fit with what we were looking to do, and we translated it has mystical, beautiful, with a little bit of edge.  You can obviously see the edge in our skulls. – Jo

Yes, everything Jo said, plus it just fit so perfectly we decided to just go with it. And after we designed our logo it was case closed! – Sam

Why did you make the decision to place crystals in the bath bombs?

Now looking back on it I don’t remember the exact decision, just the fact that it was an idea I had and we went with it. After doing some research on how crystals enhance the vibration of your bath water, it just made so much sense! Crystals are a great way to heal and detox in a way, and when added to water, it can enhance energy. – Sam

Yep, what Sam said! – Jo

As ladies who truly believe in crystals and spirituality, what are some of your favorite crystals and which 3 do you recommend for beginners?

I personally love Amazonite, Blue Calcite, Pyrite, and Rose Quartz, they just call to me, and it doesn’t hurt that they are either sparkly or my favorite colors.  I’ll have Sam tell you the best for beginners. : ) – Jo

3 crystals for beginners would definitely have to be quartz, amethyst and I would say tigers eye. Quartz is the most common stone on the planet. Quartz is a power stone. It’s even used to power most watches, that alone should tell people how strong crystals can be. It enhances energy by absorbing, storing, amplifying, balancing, focusing and transmitting. It channels universal energy. Quartz also enhances thoughts, as they are a form of energy. Amethyst, is my all time favorite, probably because it is my birth stone. But, it is a great stone for spiritual protection and in the psychic and spiritual realms, amethyst is an excellent all-purpose stone that can increase spirituality and enhance intuition and is said to be a sobering stone, (literally helping one stay sober). Lastly, Tigers eye is a great stone for almost anyone. It is the stone I like to gift to people for birthdays and celebrations. Tigers eye is a protection stone and also works great for those who are easily stressed or have anxiety. – Sam

How did bath bombs and oil blends come into play and do you struggle with all the makers out there now?

That is a great question, and looking back we literally can’t figure out how the bath bombs came about.  I think we were going to do a blog post on them, but all of a sudden we were making our first batches, and it just went crazy from there.  The essential oils were a logical next step since they go well together and we were in need of them for the bath bombs. – Jo

The bath bombs were very random and so much fun, once I came up with the idea to add crystals, so many other ideas came into play for us. Many people don’t know about the huge benefits of essential oils, and their healing properties. I personally am very very against pharmaceutical drugs and over the counter medicines, so essential oils were definitely the next step into offering our followers healing and pure products that can be used in many different ways. Plus, our skull bottles are so cute and double the size of our competitors, for half the cost. After much research, our oils definitely compete with some of the most popular brands, if not the same or better quality. Other companies I think are over priced in my opinion. And our top-selling essential oil blends are one of a kind and unique to our brand and their individual healing properties, so they speak for themselves! – Sam

What is your favorite item you’ve made, and why?

Probably our Sage Crystal Healing Bath Bombs, because in my opinion, they shit on all other bath bombs on the market. They will always be our iconic and stable item that started our entire brand. Not only do they cleanse your aura, every ingredient has a powerful healing property and we are very proud of that. 🙂 We have some really cool ideas we are working on, so some of my favorite items we haven’t even placed for sale yet! -Sam

I’d agree with Sam on that.  They will always have a special place for us.  But I am super excited about our new jewelry project! – Jo

What is something you’ve both wanted to make and sell in the shop, but haven’t figured it out yet?

We have a few things that we definitely know we want to add to the shop, and will, down the line.  It’s not so much that we haven’t figured it out as we are trying to pace ourselves.  Most of the things we’ve brought in or have in the works, we weren’t really familiar with, we just started doing research and making them happen.  There of course, have been hiccups along the way, as with any company. – Jo

We are going to do a bath line soon, with vegan silk robes and slippers, and then move into clothing eventually, so figuring out all the backend and prices and quality of products has been a mission and will continue to always be a mission, but we will figure it out, we always do.  – Sam

The site has a blog section, what are some of your favorite blogs to read and support?

Right when we first started, we found boss DIYer Rachel Metz, Living to DIY, and we just love how real she is and she is all about working hard to make your dreams happen! We also spent a lot of time in the beginning getting to know some of the top social media personalities out there, from a business perspective. – Jo

OMG Organic Olivia has been a huge inspiration to me! She is so amazing and her blog posts are so educational and informative, you can read one of her post and walk away just being in awe from everything you just learned. I also love Alex March Energy, she is an empath and energy healer whose Instagram post’s really hit me in the best way possible. I also love and look up to “A Bikini A Day” with Tash and Dev. The way that they both branded themselves and their brand, is something that I look forward to doing. Lastly, I most recently discovered and love @Headd. If you just follow her and creep a little, it will be self-explanatory. Goddess. Hands down. – Sam

Besides baths, what are some things you both do together or separately, to zen out and have ‘me’ time?

I love to journal, two years ago I went to Thailand with my family and read a book by Louis Hay called,  You Can Heal Your Life and fell in love. My amazing friend Cristie De Los Reyes recommended it to me. That was the first time I incorporated positive affirmations into my daily routine, manifesting my desires through writing. Two years ago, I manifested my ex boyfriend and it tripped me the fuck out! Writing things down and asking the universe to give you what you are ready for (or in my case alot of lessons needed)… as if I already had what I desired. Remember, “I am, I have, I love…” NOT “I want, I wish, I desire.” Other than journaling, I love love love to read, especially romance novels, but lately I have been listening to Rene Brown on Audible in my car. The Power Of Vulnerability, I just finished and The Gifts Of Imperfections, both highly recommend. Lastly, when I am by myself, I love to put on a face mask, pour a glass of wine or roll a joint.. and organize my room or plan out my days/week. – Sam

Definitely no bathing together!! HAHA kidding (I’m the sarcastic one if you can’t tell). I have had a massage membership for a few years, so I love getting massages and facials.  I’ve also done CrossFit for many years, so when I go (working on going more often!) I’m literally so tired I can’t think, it’s more of a forced zen time and it’s awesome. Sometimes I love to literally just sit and watch some mindless TV to wind down. And I tend to try to day dream before I go to bed, if not my mind will think about business and I will never go to sleep.  I’ve always had a mind that goes a million miles per hour, so sometimes it’s hard to turn it off.  I’m somewhat of an overthinker, you can ask Sam… but I’m usually just trying to prepare us best for all scenarios. Together, we work so often at night, since I have a full time job, that we usually crack open some beers or a bottle of wine and watch some tv or girly movies (Sam hates that I started her on those) between working or brainstorming.  – Jo

Tell me a crystal and essential oil that explains one another. Jo choose for Sam, and Sam choose for Jo.

Sam is definitely lemongrass. She LOVES it!! Crystal wise, she might be a Citrine since it is known for optimism and transforming dreams.  It was also the first standing point we purchased for our shop because she loved it so much.  She is always the more optimistic, which is why we balance each other so well. But I need to get her blood stone. I’ve never seen any one throw/drop their phone so many times and it survive!!  I call her my little bull in a china shop! HAHA – Jo

Hmmmmmmm for Jo I would choose Rhodonite, because it is a stone of grace and elegance. It decreases anxiety while increasing attention to detail.  She was also immediately drawn to this stone when we first ordered some, which I think says a lot. It is fitting because Jo is very clam and definitely pays a lot closer attention to detail, and catches every little thing that I miss. Haha. For oils, I would choose lavender, because she is calm and collected 24/7, even when she is mad! LOL – Sam

What is something you’ve always wanted to do, but have never attempted or done it?

I’ve always wanted to travel more.  Life has always been crazy, or I’ve focused on big purchases like my home, so I just haven’t made it a priority to. – Jo

I want to travel the world, so many places I can’t wait to visit and I know one day we will be able to! Other than that nothing else comes to mind. Very grateful for this life and family that I have. – Sam

What is your go to drink and food of choice?

Yikes, I love food, so that is a hard one.  I’m a sucker for Mexican food, I mean we do live in Cali… and I love craft beers. Healthy right? – Jo

I have been an “Attempting Gluten-Free Vegan” for the past like two years. Haha, I say attempting very hardly, because it is hard! I, for sure, have my cheat days.. but my go to for food would be Mediterranean or maybe even Indian, I love curry and making curry. Drink, sober wise, would be kombucha or alkaline water. Or, a lemon drop martini with kettle one! -Sam

Side note that the Indian food dinner we had last night was Sam’s idea! : ) – Jo

What are some of your favorite makers and brands to support?

We’ve met so many great people during our short time, that it has been awesome, I’ll have Sam do some of those. JFox Jewelry was one of my friends before this, but she has been great to get together with and brainstorm. But seriously we’ve gotten to know so many awesome people and our customers rock too!! – Jo

Organic OliviaWitch I Love Your HairSoulful Alchemy, Mallabella Jewels… any other independent light workers who are working on their own brands, we love to support! – Sam

What’s a guilty pleasure that you’re embarrassed about?

Hmmmm I literally don’t know…. – Jo

Keeping up with the Kardashians and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. – Sam

Lastly, what’s one thing you would tell yourself 10 years back?

There are two jobs I would have told myself not to do, but one of those led me to meet Sam, so it’s not a regret.  Friendships you’ve had in the past and/or future will come and go, and it’s perfectly natural, surround yourself with positive influences.  You can’t move forward if you are staying the same.  Something I’d tell others… you won’t get anywhere if you aren’t working for it.  My theory for working on Chasin’ Unicorns (and most of my projects) is that it’s like a retirement account.  If you don’t have any money in the bank account, it can’t make interest, and in 10 years, you will have to work a lot harder to get where you would have been if you started early.  A company or project can’t become successful until you start it, and the sooner you finish each project, the sooner it can begin to reward you.  Lastly, every speed bump you encounter, take it one step at a time, and learn from it. – Jo

You are a rockstar, don’t listen to them, don’t get vaccinated. Don’t eat that shit and don’t cry because it won’t matter tomorrow, and keep hustling. My grandma always use to say “This too shall pass” so that has always been a life motto of mine to live by. All of my mistakes and heart breaks the past ten years, have lead me to this point and I am grateful for it all!

Woah woah woah, had badass and inspiring are these ladies? I really didn’t know what to expect going into this interview, but I feel like I just found 2 GIRL BOSSES to look up to!

Chasin’ Unicorns has so much growth coming up and I can’t wait to witness and support it! I hope you all do too.
