Have you ever wondered why you get a fever when you’re sick? People label this as a symptom of being sick, but actually a fever (like many other “symptoms”) is something your body does on purpose to help itself fight off the infection because your high temp helps steam out all of the little foreign invaders.

Western Medicine vs Homeopathy

Most western medicines souly address our symptoms and not our problem. For example, if you are suffering from acne they will most likely prescribe you a medicated face wash when there are a ton of potential internal causes, like hormone imbalances, or eating the wrong foods that could be causing the break outs!

Masking your symptoms is like muting your body while it is trying to tell you something important, which is why more and more people are turning to holistic medical practices! Holistic medicine is what existed long before western medicine and in many parts of the world are still the only medical systems in place. Holistic healing addresses the whole person (the physical, mental, AND emotional bodies) when looking for treatments, and there are sooo many different types of holistic healing. That is where Homeopathy comes in!

Homeopathy is the practice of treating the WHOLE person with minute doses of 100% natural substances. This alternative medicine practice was created by Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700’s on the principle similia similibus curentur, or in English “like cures like.” This means that a natural substance that would cause a cough in a health person is exactly what should be given to an unhealthy person who is experiencing a cough. This principle is also used within western medicine for ADHD medication. ADHD medication calms and helps focus the mind of someone with ADHD. However, it has the reverse effect on someone that doesn’t have ADHD. The medication can make them very over stimulated and impulsive with a lack of focus.

Remedies and Treatments

Homeopathic remedies or treatments are made from plants, herbs, minerals or animal products (so do your research if you are vegan!).
The natural substance is first crushed and put into water and/or alcohol to dissolve. Then, the substance undergoes a diluting process that involves a lot of vigorous shaking. The remaining product has hardly any of the original substance left, but what is left behind is the essence of that substance!

Homeopathy principles state that the more diluted from the original substance a remedy is the more potent it becomes. This is the result of increasing the concentration of the essence of that substance. Finally, the solution is then made into a pellet or tablet with lactose and/or sucrose, which are both sugar enzymes. You can find these treatments at many health food stores or online which makes self-treatment of acute illnesses very easy! If you are looking to do some self-treatment, make sure to do your research and look for FDA regulated remedies (sometimes online remedies are not regulated the same way remedies sold in health food stores are!). If you are unfamiliar with homeopathy remedies or the practice in general or are trying to treat a chronic illness, I would suggest first doing a consultation with a license homeopathic doctor!

Traditionally, homeopathic doctors will go over their patient’s entire medical history as well as review all of their symptoms within the three sections of health (physical, mental, & emotional) as well as their sleep and eating habits. Once all of that information is considered, the doctor will prescribe one homeopathic remedy for the patient to try. With modern homeopathic treatments the consultation stays the same, however; combination remedies have become more popular for certain treatments. Depending on your insurance these consultations may not be covered by your health insurance, but these services don’t typically cost as much a seeing a traditional doctor and you won’t be prescribe any pricey prescription medications!

If you are suffering from an acute or chronic illness where western medicine doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, or maybe you just prefer all natural treatments give homeopathy a try! The National Center for Homeopathy has a great database of ailments that homeopathy has results treating, anything from back pain to chronic anxiety! -> https://www.homeopathycenter.org/find-remedy

Always remember to use these remedies as directed with proper dosing and be patient! Homeopathy doctors will typically recommend sticking to a treatment for a little while before moving onto the next to give the remedy plenty of time to try to improve your overall health!
