Is Your Citrine Real…Or FAKE?! And Why It Matters

So… I recently discovered some pretty cool information as I embarked on a crystal class together last week at Vision & Dreams. I learned which crystals are “programmable,” which crystals (like Citrine) can lock in intentions and how the different shapes of crystals affect the healing and characteristic qualities. Crystals are conscious and living beings that came and grow directly from the earth. They are thousands, hundreds, millions of years old. What would you do with a conscious being that is 100,000 years old? You would probably listen to it, right? Because being that old... it probably knows some things.

With the whole Crystal trend that's poppin’ right now (which we LOVE by the way), you have different types of crystal lovers: the ones that know nothing and love them because they are sparkly, the ones that actually study them and talk to them, know their individual healing benefits and the ones who sell them because they know its a trend and want to cash out.

With that being said, Citrine is one, if not the MOST popular crystal in the WORLD. Because of its strong characteristics of prosperity and abundance, people all over the world caught on and wanted a piece for themselves. Natural Citrine is a premier stone of manifestation, imagination, and personal will. Carrying the power of the sun, it is warm and comforting, energizing and life-giving. Called The Merchant’s Stone for its properties of increase in the cashbox, sparkling yellow Citrine not only assists in acquiring wealth but helps in maintaining it.

Naturally occurring Citrine is a variety of Quartz that is found at only a few places in the world. The color of natural Citrine is a lemon shade, in stark contrast to the predominantly red influence to the majority of “Citrine” available to beginning collectors.

Since there are so few locations for great quality natural Citrine, the demand for this brightly colored mineral leads to people figuring out that if you stuck certain types of Amethyst into a kiln you could turn the purple into a deep reddish-orange.

Genuine Natural Citrine crystals are distinct and easy to tell apart from the “burnt Amethyst” ones… but still, people offer it for sale everywhere. Here is what real citrine looks like:

One researcher even sent numerous messages to some dealers about the misleading descriptions and they respond by making the descriptions that much more misleading! Take this quote for example…

"Citrine is very difficult to acquire, and the cost is more expensive than Amethyst of the same quality. This Citrine is a higher standard of quality which of course commands a higher price as with all of my Citrine specimens they have very little matrix which means more crystals for your money."

Another thing to note is that real Citrine should not be tooth-shaped.

At least 99% of the “citrine” on the market is heat-treated amethyst, which again is colored by the presence of iron, not aluminum and lithium, like true citrine.

True natural citrine is extremely rare.

With this being said, heat treating or enhancing a crystal – to fake another crystal, can, will and does, reduce the frequency & effectiveness of the crystal itself, since it weakens the stone some. Some healers and channelers even say that it ruins and kills the stone completely. Since they are conscious beings, how would we like it if we got dipped into boiling hot water and changed our color?

So be on the lookout! Is your citrine real? Or fake? We have been buying fake citrine for the past few months not knowing this information and we were both shocked and sad to have found out this truth. Now we are on the quest to get a real citrine in our collection. If you are interested in adding real Citrine to your crystal collection, click here.
