Why You Need Blue Light Blocking Glasses - Chasin' Unicorns

Why You Need Blue Light Blocking Glasses

The best thing to happen to us all week was adding blue light blocker glasses! As a night owl and working on my laptop almost the entire day, I intuitively knew that I needed to protect my eyes. We are wearing the Daywalkers and Steph is wearing the Daywalker Transition which have color changing lenses once they hit the sun. These are ideal for users who work/live/play in environments that are lit with artificial blue light and exposed to long periods of time on TV, Laptops, phones, etc. Also ideal for shift workers as they can be more sensitive to artificial lighting during the dark hours they are awake, which disrupts natural sleep-wake cycle/circadian rhythm. These block 40%-75% junk light

👓 Reduce eyestrain and headaches

👓 Improve sleep quality

👓 Increased Energy and mood

We also both have a night time pair, the Twilights that we wear once the sun goes down that are red, to help us get ready for a great nights sleep. These glasses tell your body its dark. You can still watch TV or work on your computer, while your sleep hormones shift into night mode. Another great use is for people who get up in middle of night and need to get back to sleep quickly. Designed to wear 30 min – 2 hours before bed. These block over 90% blue light.

👓 Stress and anxiety

👓 Seasonal affective disorder

👓Endocrine disruption & insomnia

What is Junk Light? The Benefit?

Junk light is the over-exposure to artificial light at the wrong time of day that can aggressively inhibit your melatonin levels and the physiology of your eyes. Artificial light sources, especially LEDs, compact fluorescent (CFLs), computer, smartphone, and eReader screens are nearly unavoidable. These light sources amplify the blue, green and purple parts of the light spectrum.  Your body’s sleep-wake cycle, also known at your circadian rhythm,  is incredibly sensitive to this spectrum of light. When exposed to it at the wrong time of day or night, you end up with junk light, which impacts your ability to get quality sleep. Thousands of studies show that poor sleep leads to a host of other physical and emotional issues.

Deep, restful sleep is essential for allowing your mind and body to heal, recuperate, and recover from the stress and exhaustion of the day.

Junk light impacts photoreceptor cells in your eyes, and suppresses the natural production of of the sleep hormone, melatonin, which throws off our body’s internal clock, disrupting our ability to sleep deeply and restfully. Junk light also emits a unique glare that impacts your retina causing eye strain, headaches, and physical and mental fatigue. Junk light may contribute to and, or be linked to many chronic health conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Eye strain
  • Headaches
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Problems sleeping, due to melatonin suppression
  • Stress and anxiety, due to cortisol suppression
  • Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder or depression
  • Endocrine disruption and a poor immune system
  • Female hormonal/menstrual cycle disruption
  • Weight issues
  • Agoraphobia (anxiety disorder)

IS THERE SCIENCE THAT SHOWS BLUE LIGHT IS HARMFUL?

Yes! There are thousands of studies. Here are a few to get you started.

TrueDark® is a health and wellness consumer brand created by Biohacked (and co-founded by Dave Asprey) that uses patented technology to help people protect their eyes and improve their quality of life. TrueDark® products essentially optimize your exposure to harmful light – day or night – restoring your circadian rhythm and bringing balance to your mind and body.  Think about TrueDark® technology solutions like noise-canceling headphones for your eyes. They protect your internal processes from the disruption, chaos and noise of the world. They help you feel, live and be better.

We recently created a very in-depth guide to biohacking, which I think would be a handy resource for you guys:

TrueDark® Daywalker glasses can help you manage the calibration of your circadian rhythm during the day, freeing your hormones and neurotransmitters to do their best work and  resulting in:

  • Improved sleep quality
  • Feeling sharper and more focused
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced brain inflammation
  • Improved mood

TrueDark® Twilight glasses can be used at night as part of your sleep and environmental junk light strategy to address:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Endocrine disruption
  • Poorly functioning immune system
  • Weight issues
  • Insomnia

Further, studies have shown that junk light may contribute to macular degeneration, cancer, aging, diabetes, stroke, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, and gastric conditions. TrueDark® glasses are proven to filter or block this very same junk light. When used in combination, TrueDark® Daywalkers and Twilights restore your circadian rhythms to their natural state, improving your performance and give you more energy, focus, and clarity on a daily basis. WHAT WAVELENGTHS ARE BLOCKED BY TWILIGHT EYEWEAR?

TrueDark® Twilight glasses block at least 90% of the wavelengths below 570nm – basically all blue, green and violet. We block the broadest spectrum on the market! Melanopsin, which is required for melatonin production, is very sensitive to green and violet, as well as blue. We created Twilight glasses because the “blue blocking glasses” advertised throughout the internet were limited to blocking only blue, making them insufficient as sleep or sleep hacking glasses.
